MISSION & HISTORY.

Founded in 1952, the Hispanic Society of Victoria proudly holds the distinction of being the oldest active Hispanic organization in Victoria. The Society's humble beginnings trace back to a group of Victorian scholars, translators, and Hispanic enthusiasts. They initiated intimate gatherings called 'Tertulias'—cultural soirées—where they shared their experiences of traveling to Latin America and Spain. Over time, the Society opened its doors to anyone interested and led to its official incorporation in 2008 with the formation of a management committee, and the commencement of monthly public gatherings. Today, the 'Tertulias' continue to thrive at the Box Hill Community Arts Centre.

The Hispanic Society of Victoria Inc. is a non-profit organisation with the purpose to:

assist and encourage the study of the Spanish language, literature and other disciplines conducive to the better understanding of the Spanish and Latin American cultures;
provide an opportunity for English-Spanish speaking people to meet;
promote cross-cultural interchanges between Australian, Spanish and Latin American people; and
provide a platform for new and established culturally and linguistically diverse artists to showcase their performing and visual artform.
